A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Title: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Author: Betty Smith

Rating (out of 10 stars): 100000

Ages: 11 and up

Brief Summary: I adore this book. I have read it countless times and I never get bored of it. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is about a girl named Francie Nolan, a sensitive, book-loving girl. It takes place in the early to mid 20th century. It starts when Francie is eleven and it ends when she is seventeen. The book is about Francie's life, all her ups and downs, her happiest moments and her saddest ones. It shows us both the charm and the danger of Brooklyn through the eyes of an observant, bright young girl as she changes into a woman. I find it very well written. Francie is the most relatable character I have ever come across, and her story is captivating and honest.

When two best friends crash land a plane in France in 1943, one of them makes it to the British airbase they were aiming for. The other does not. This is a heart breaking story, told from both girls' point of view, about British spies and pilots during WWII. It is a story of survival and friendship.
